FREEVIEW NATIONAL RE-TUNE took place on 30 SEPTEMBER 2009

This is the press release that was issued by Freeview. Although that day has now passed the information here has proved helpful to customers who wish to know more about Freeview Re-tuning.

Dear Customers

On or after Wednesday 30 September 2009, every one of the 18 million UK homes with a Freeview TV or box will need to re-tune.

This includes Freeview homes in regions that have already completed switchover. The re-tune is necessary for them to continue to receive Channel Five and other services that will move from their current multiplex location to another. The move also enables around 500K Freeview viewers to get Five for the first time from 30 September.

As part of the event, services will vacate Multiplex B to help free it for the launch of HD in the future. Satellite, digital cable and analogue TV homes will not need to re-tune.

Not all changes to the Freeview line-up have been confirmed yet, look out for a press release from Freeview to be released shortly and see www.tvretune.co.uk for subsequent updates on new channel launches and replacements.

The main points are:
  • Re-tune required from lunchtime onwards on 30 September 2009 as:
    Nationally

  • Five moves mux to be available to all Freeview homes at the point of switchover
also enables around 500K Freeview viewers to get Five for the first time from 30 Sept.

  • ITV3 and ITV4 to move to a commercial mux.

  • Discovery to launch QUEST – a new Freeview channel.
Plus for areas that have already gone through switchover

  • All BBC radio stations and BBC Red button services move.

  • Existing DTT homes served by a relay lose ITV3 and ITV4 services.

  • Community Channel closes.
Additionally at Huntshaw Cross and Redruth main transmitters in the West Country

  • All three commercial muxes change UHF frequency and move to 8K mode.

  • New support services launched New dedicated website - www.tvretune.co.uk

  • New helpline (08456 05 11 22) with Interactive Voice Response (IVR).

  • The 30 September national re-tune led by Freeview in partnership with the public service broadcasters and supported by Digital UK.
It involves only services moving between multiplexes, and not the multiplexes themselves moving frequency, except for Huntshaw Cross and Redruth main transmitters that will be completing switchover changes.

  • Split NIT models will be revealed.
Remember the Freeview National Re-tune will reveal legacy Split NIT products where owners have deferred re-tuning since Freeview and DMOL updated the network to carry more services. For more information, call Freeview on 08701 111270. NB: The National Retune itself does not impact 2K products. They are only affected by switchover at which point transmissions move to the 8K mode.

Common Questions

1. Will all digital equipment need to be re-tuned?
The technical process is expected to complete by lunchtime, and viewers with a Freeview TV or box will be able to re-tune their equipment at any point after that. Note that it is not essential to re-tune on Wednesday 30 September itself if they are not around, but they should re-tune as soon as they can to avoid losing services.
Note that while some Freeview equipment does automatically identify new services when they are first launched, the service moves on the 30 September are different, and we believe that most or all equipment will need to be re-tuned (sometimes called a “first time installation”) by the viewer. Even if the service name still appears on the on-screen menu, viewers will find that the channel itself is not available until they re-tune.
Analogue TVs, Sky and Freesat boxes do not need to be re-tuned.

2. Will anyone lose any services?
Around half a million current Freeview viewers will be able to receive Five for the first time after the re-tune, as it moves to a multiplex with higher coverage. Some viewers will lose coverage of other channels (see tvretune.co.uk for updates).
Freeview viewers watching relay transmitters in areas that have already switched (Border, West Country and parts of Wales - less than half a million homes) will lose access to some services as they move to a commercial multiplex that is not broadcast from the relay transmitters.
The Community Channel service on Freeview will be closed on 30 September in regions that have already switched over. It will close in other regions as they switch.

3. What communications and support will there be?
Consumer communications will include a new automated re-tuning phoneline (08456 05 11 22) and website (tvretune.co.uk) providing product specific, easy-to-follow re-tuning guides.
On-screen messages will run on the Freeview channels from Thursday 17 September, with full page on-screen messages in place of channels that have moved from Wednesday 30 September until Sunday 4 October.
There will also be national press advertising on Sunday 27 and Wednesday 30 September, and electrical retailers have been supplied leaflets and posters.

  • Remember, re-tuning is an integral part of the Freeview platform, so customers buying Freeview TVs or boxes should re-tune from time to time. This will mean that you continue to receive the channels and services available to you.

Many older Freeview Receivers are not compatible with the new signal transmission format, and therefore would not tune in to the new TV channels.

If you are experiencing similar problems, then it could be that you require a new Freeview Set-top-box.

You may also require an aerial upgrade as many have found that after the changes, their aerial no longer picked up a good signal.

An aerial upgrade can help with this problem.
